I use the vocabulary and skills of textiles to sculpt forms that often reference body and/or nature. Primarily I hand knit wire and other nontraditional materials into forms that often grow from simple elements of nature a stick, a rock, a piece of bark, or other objects of my existence such as found scraps of metal. I intend to magnify nature, reference concepts of the feminine through body and domesticity, examine life’s daily debris, and to celebrate the legacy of handwork that has perpetuated much of culture. The female figure always fascinates whether it is being glorified, deified, or vilified. The feminine ideal thins and widens throughout history but Western woman’s love/hate obsession with her body, with other women’s, bodies remains a constant struggle. As I explore these landscapes of corporeality, I intend to both celebrate the beauty and envelope the love/hate split. My Stick Figure series, an ongoing development of work, incorporates the simple gesture of a stick into a figurative form. The series began with a found stick and references both primitive drawing and the quest for thinness.I My first juried gallery show in which I participated in 1994, featured an art doll called The Zoo Keeper, which was knit of my hand spun yarn, my medium of choice, at that time.
