Deborah Foutch* Minneapolis
The world constantly delights my eye. I came to work in mixed media because it allows me to approach the complex combinations of color, texture, light and meaning that I find beautiful in the natural world. I came to figures from a love of stories partially told. The bits of the world glimpsed and passed on. When art contains a
human figure there is a story present. When my art is a human figure I
am using the techniques taught to me by my grandmothers and mother: sewing, beading, wrapping, making use of bits of things that might other wise be discarded. I am passing on a story in a way that pleases my hand, my eye, and my curiosity for what the rest of the story might be.
I made my 1st Art Doll 37years ago in a painting class when a self portrait was assigned. I painted cotton fabric used measurements from my body and constructed a life sized figure. Since then I have changed scale and materials many times as I explored the embellished figure from 1” to 10' tall.
For more than 20 years I have shown my figure work at art fairs and in galleries. I have taught the techniques I employ sculpting body parts and wrapping wire armatures to create art dolls for 10 years. I no longer travel to festivals with my dolls but make a limited number exhibited in a annual show at my studio in NE Minneapolis Mn. I also continue to teach dollmaking at that studio.Galleries:
