Artist Statement

My work is about the body as a vessel for the spirit and a vehicle for navigating the world. Serene faces suggest peace and acceptance; closed eyes gaze inward. The varied surfaces I employ illustrate the importance of personal style and individuality.
A carved Styrofoam core determines the shape and essence of each piece. As in life, layers are added-protecting and defining. Materials including papier mache and air-drying clay give me flexibility and control over the surfaces of my work. Patina is achieved with acrylic paint and wax.

Victoria started her life as a seed. I took the gourd that grew from that seed and saw a female figure in it. She is the iconic female- beautiful, grounded and at peace.

Polished black stones were the inspiration for this piece. They were placed on a carved armature. As the work evolved I saw that the stones needed to be connected to each other. Strong color contrast and rich surface design make Reconnection dramatic as well as personal.
